The Weird Stuff We Love to Eat

Recently I was chatting with a friend on Twitter about the fact that I was craving McDonald’s french fries with a side of their tartar sauce for dipping. This completely grossed her out. What? I thought to myself, She doesn’t know the deliciousness quotient of a hot salty McD’s fry dipped in cold creamy tartar sauce? How sad. Then I asked how she feels about dipping her fries in plain old mayonnaise. Nope. She thinks that is gross too.

Wow. Those are both things I really love. They rank right up there with dipping my fries in a fresh slice of juicy tomato (sort of like a weird super fresh ketchup) or dipping crispy bacon in A1 sauce. These things are all delicious. And they are not at all weird in my mind.

Which got me thinking. What are some of the things that we love to eat – and I’m not talking about glue or dryer lint – that other people may consider a little odd?

I know my number one “weird” food item. When I tell people about it they all look at me like I’m crazy. But…when they actually try it – and many have over the past two decades – they usually end up loving it. The weird thing I love the most? Buttered Cheerios. Now before you turn up your nose, let me explain. Buttered Cheerios is something my dad started making when I was a very little kid. I’ve grown up with them. I’ve passed my love of this tasty treat onto my husband and my son. I dare you to try them and tell me they aren’t good. The best part? They are really easy to make. Fill a cereal bowl up with Cheerios. Pour a tablespoon or so of melted butter on top. Stir and eat with a spoon.

I’m drooling just thinking about them.

In order to broaden our culinary horizons and accept each other regardless of what we choose to put in our mouths, I asked my Curvy Girl compatriots to share some of their favorite interesting things to eat. This is what they had to say:

Jen: I am, like, the world’s pickiest eater (trust me) but my all time
favorite comfort food is pizza with Canadian bacon and sauerkraut.

Laurin: Mine is Lay’s plain chips dipped in yellow mustard.

Nanette: Over-easy eggs on top of white rice. Mayo on corn on the cob!

Allison: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos with movie-style nacho cheese poured in the bag…eaten out of the bag.

Angie: Peanut butter, banana, & mayo sandwiches.

Emily: Peanut butter on cheeseburgers. Oh, with jalapenos too.

Daisy: I like to dip things in a ketchup/sour cream swirl.

JennyGrace: I like to dip my chips in peanut butter.

Amy: How about fries and gravy?  Very Canadian.  Mmmm.

Katie: I like to dip fries in mustard swirled with ketchup.

I love these ladies and their weird food habits. Some of their favorites I’m not so sure about, but hey, I’d try them at least once. How about you? What are some of the weird things YOU love to eat? How about trying one of the things we love?

Don’t go mocking the ketchup/sour cream swirl. It is deeeelicious. But I’m not sure I could ever, ever go for a sandwich with peanut butter, mayo and bananas. It makes my stomach turn to think about.

Mmm I love weird food combos! Although buttered cherios sound weird…

One of my guilty pleasures is chips (fries, im in England so we call then chips) with bolognese and cheese… all melty and yum!

A weird local delicacy around these parts is the mighty “Parmo”
Which is deep fried chicken in batter topped with a white béchamel sauce and cheese… I personally find them gross but they sell like hot cakes around here.

When I was at school we used to mix weird foods, one we discovered was sherbet poured into a packet of cheese and onion crisps (chips). weirdly addictive! LOL

When my mom was pregnant with me, she had wicked bad morning sickness. Until someone suggested saltines with mustard. She ate those for the rest of her pregnancy, and 31 years (almost 32 OMG!) later, that remains my fave snack. I just love mustard period. I’ll eat it on pretzels, chips, fries. I have 4 different kinds of mustard in my house. A nice mustard marinade complements any kind of meat.

Mayo/Ketchup swirl dip aka my special sauce for French fries. Or just plain Ranch dressing for dipping fries, chicken tenders into. I love fries with McD’s hot mustard sauce. MMMMM the big thing I get weird looks about though is bologna and cream cheese rolls. It’s simple: take a slice of bologna, smear cream cheese in the middle (generous amount, roll it up, and eat it! My mom started me on that when we were young. I love it.

1 – Mix peanut butter and blackburn syrup (Has to be that brand, all the rest just don’t work), run anything through that (especially crispy bacon).

2 – Mix equal amounts yellow mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup together. Add one teaspoon of relish (homemade thousand island). Add that to just about anything but especially hot dogs.

the french fries in gravy is delicious! I craved that a lot when I was pregnant. It’s a common dish in the northeast, but my fellow midwesterners thought I was crazy!

In Pittsburgh, we have a tradition of mixing foods together. Some of my favorites from home: primanti sandwich which consists of two thick slices of italian bread, your choice of meat, french fries and german-style coleslaw…all on the sandwich. Also, steak salads, which consist of greens, hard boiled egg, tomato wedge, grilled steak, cheese AND fries w/ ranch dressing, of course! Both these dishes get knocked when I talk about it…but one try and you’re hooked!

The combo of the Bailey’s and lime juice cause it to coagulate and the result is a brain looking think floating in the vodka. IMO, shots should not have to be chewed.

As for myself, I love dipping potato products and bread products in applesauce. Doesn’t matter if it’s fries, or mashed potatoes, or baked potatoes, etc. Dip it in the applesauce and I am all set. Same with bread. My FAVORITE bread item are the Red Lobster biscuits in applesauce, but you’ll have to bring your own applesauce [or get the biscuits to go] as they don’t have it any more. Love the looks I used to get there when I’d ask for a side of applesauce. Heh.

My mom used to always butter our Pop Tarts when I was growing up. So yummy! I rarely eat Pop Tarts anymore, though.

I also hardly ever eat McDonald’s, but when I do, I like to dip my fries in the hot mustard nugget sauce. I think I picked that up from my best friend in middle school and it stuck with me.

Bacon and maple syrup. Comes from years of my parents making pancakes every Sunday morning, with bacon sides. The syrup always got on the bacon from the pancakes. It’s almost better on the bacon than the pancakes.

I had no idea that people thought grilled cheese dipped in ketchup / scrambled eggs with salsa / peanut butter and banana sandwiches were weird. Around here grilled cheese dipped in tomato soup is quite a renowned comfort food.

LOVE french fries dipped in tartar sauce. My mom thinks its so gross. And french fries in a Frosty is a must! I haven’t done that in so long! I used to go to Burger King because I liked their fries best, and then walk down the street and get a Jr Frosty at Wendy’s. Heaven! Chicken fingers in honey is soooo good too! Maple syrup on bacon isn’t weird at all, we always get bacon that is maple flavored! The smell as its cooking is wonderful! I can not eat a grilled cheese sandwich unless I have cold ketchup to dip it into! One of my favorite types of pizza is ham, pineapple and marichino cherries! Its something my best friend came up with years ago, and we both love it! Another thing I like to do, and it might not be too weird, is mix Maltesers (and Irish candy, sorta like Whoppers, but yummier) with buttery, salty popcorn. Mmmmmm I love salty and sweet combos. But its a taste combination I just discovered I like only a few years ago. I’m so glad to hear that I am not the only one that likes weird foods. :) Now I’m hungry!

Holly, I have another way to step up the Cheerios. Melt butter in a sauce pan and pour in cheerios and get the butter to coat the cheerios and the heat from the pan warms it all up and it is glorious. It’s like fried Cheerios. (So glad I wasn’t the only one that grew up with butter on their Cheerios!)

Not too sour. The apple doesn’t absorb much vinegar since it’s so full of water. Plus, I don’t use sour apples like granny smith. I like gala.

One of my favourites is Jamaican beef patties with cream cheese and mustard. So good. Also adore cantaloupe with cottage cheese, and bacon with maple syrup. Fudgeeos are also amazing spread with some peanut butter, tastes like a Reese peanut butter cup.

Peanut butter spread on a warm, flour tortilla! My husband got me hooked on this. You just turn the burner on the stove on, put the tortilla on top, flip it a few times and then spread the peanut butter on while it is still warm to make it all gooey and delicious. Roll it up and enjoy! Now I need to go eat one.

i didn’t see this one mentioned…..grilled cheese with peanut butter on top? well…now in our house it’s sunflower butter (child with peanut allergy) soooo good. dipping just grilled cheese in ketchup or tomato soup is awesome. chicken noodle soup with some ketchup is tasty as is mac and cheese with some.

a “weird” dish i make for dinner sometimes is chicken and waffles…but not probably how you’ve seen on tv. just cooked shredded chicken breast on top of a warm waffle then chicken gravy poured on top. top with salt and pepper…..it’s so amazing. the fried chicken and syrup combo of it is weird to me and just not right.

what about a pancake with butter then sugar sprinkled on top then rolled up? that’s our “breakfast dessert”

I heard a horrible, HORRIBLE joke about mayo (think nasty teen zits) and to this day cannot eat it unless I don’t know it’s in a recipe. I’m silently gagging now. Belch. Ugh. My craziest combo is probably plain chips dipped in mustard. It’s not a favorite by any means, but I’m a pretty plain Jane kind of gal so it’s the zaniest I could come up with. Again, mayo? Gag.

My friends in high school used to make “prison burritos”. You get a regular bag of nacho cheese Doritos, chili ramen, and if you’re really fancy, some shredded cheddar cheese. Open the Doritos, make the chili ramen inside the bag, then roll the bag closed and let sit for a few minutes. The contents will solidify (I know, sounds gross). Cut the bag all the way open, sprinkle with cheddar cheese, and enjoy!

What my family calls “toast cereal”, you break up toast in a bowl and add warm milk and sugar, super yum! My favorite is cottage cheese and applesauce, I like to make a hole in my cottage cheese and put the applesauce in the middle, like mashed potatoes and gravy.
